Adam’s album “Vibes And Tribes” available now!
Vibes + Tribes is Adam’s first full length jazz recording as a leader. The album consists of six original songs and two standards. Elements of composition, improvisation and small group interplay lend each of the performances a unique and unpredictable feel. However the music remains grounded in melody and conversational exchanges between the instrumentalists.
Stylistically, the playing expresses both an awareness of the jazz guitar tradition while incorporating diverse elements of contemporary music including calypso, pop, rock, and classic motown sounds. The influence of guitar titans such as Jim Hall, Joe Pass and Grant Green can be detected at times along with compositional inspiration gleaned from Duke Ellington. One of the album’s original compositions “Sunday Evening with Duke” imagines the iconic composer relaxing at home in his favorite recliner chair with his dog resting at his feet.
What shines through in this recording ultimately, is the personable nature of the compositions and the heightened sensitivity of the musicians. The sense of spontaneity catches the listener off guard and reveals the unique and authentic voice of the performers.
Vibes + Tribes is a culmination of a four year period during which Adam lived, performed, and studied in Durham, North Carolina. While completing his masters in composition, and working as a graduate assistant, Adam was fortunate to collaborate with a talented array of musicians. The album features Dorien Dotson on drums, Butler Knowles on upright bass, and Dexter Moses on flute and alto sax.
